Travel Advice and Immunisations

What do we do?
Our practice nurses offer a travel advice and immunisation service. They offer help with:

  • Vaccinations
  • Preventing malaria (using tablets and avoiding bites)
  • Looking after any on going illnesses abroad
  • Sexual health (how to stay well)
  • Looking after your skin (sun burn and heat rash)

We need time to make sure we give you the correct travel advice. We like to check your records for past immunisations and illnesses and run a check on the diseases that are prevalent in areas where you are traveling.  In order to get things right for you, please come to the surgery and complete a Travel Form, telling us about your travel plans. This is passed to our nurses.  Please allow them a week to make these checks then ring back to discuss what help you may need and to arrange immunisations. You can print off a Travel Form from this web site if you like. (one form per person traveling)

If you require more detailed travel advice we suggest you look at these web sites:
www.doh.gov.uk
www.travelhealth.co.uk

fit for travel (NHS Scotland site)

Alternatively there is an excellent booklet you can pick up from the Post Office with an E111 (European Union travel insurance form)

Payments
Please be aware that most travel immunisation and advice is covered by the NHS.

Most anti-malaria tablets can be bought directly from the chemist. There are some however that we have to prescribe for you on a non-NHS prescription. The chemist will ask you to pay for the cost of the tablets and the practice will charge a fee of £10.00.
